Ukraine’s Zelenskyy heads to Washington for Trump talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will travel to Washington on Monday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, in a high-stakes diplomatic push following an inconclusive summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The announcement came after a lengthy phone call between Trump and Zelenskyy on Saturday, in which both leaders discussed the outcomes of the recent U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska. Zelenskyy described the call as substantive and said the meeting in Washington will focus on efforts to end the war in Ukraine and halt continued bloodshed.

Zelenskyy heads to DC as Trump signals new approach

No agreement was reached at the Alaska summit. Talks between Trump and Putin concluded without a ceasefire or roadmap for peace. Trump has since indicated he now favors negotiating a comprehensive peace settlement rather than pushing for a temporary cessation of hostilities, a shift seen as closer to Moscow’s position than that of Kyiv or key European allies. Zelenskyy reaffirmed Ukraine’s desire for a broader diplomatic process and reiterated his call for a trilateral dialogue that includes both Russia and the United States.

He also emphasized the importance of European involvement in any long-term security guarantees, underlining that Ukraine’s stability is tied to the broader security framework of the region. On Saturday morning, Zelenskyy held discussions with several European leaders, who reiterated their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. They called for continued sanctions against Russia and expressed concern over the lack of concrete outcomes from the Alaska summit. Trump has suggested that if Monday’s meeting with Zelenskyy proves productive, he may pursue a follow-up summit that includes Putin.

Trump favors full peace deal over short-term truce

According to U.S. officials, the White House is considering options for such a trilateral gathering, but no timetable has been set. As diplomatic efforts unfold, intense fighting continues along Ukraine’s southern and eastern front lines. Ukrainian officials reported fresh Russian missile and drone attacks near Kherson and Donetsk over the weekend, underscoring the urgency of the ongoing negotiations. The planned meeting in Washington is expected to be a pivotal moment in the search for a viable path to peace, with both leaders aiming to explore avenues beyond short-term military pauses.

No timetable yet for potential three-party summit

For Zelenskyy, the trip offers a chance to press Ukraine’s position directly with the U.S. president. For Trump, it presents an opportunity to recalibrate the diplomatic strategy following stalled progress with Moscow. Officials in Kyiv said Zelenskyy is traveling with a delegation that includes senior military and diplomatic advisors, and discussions in Washington are expected to cover military aid, sanctions enforcement, and strategic security guarantees. The meeting comes at a critical time, as Ukraine seeks firm commitments from Western allies and greater clarity on the future shape of peace negotiations. – By Content Syndication Services.
